It is set at Oxford College in England during the 1890’s, and takes place during an era when the custom of courting was much different, requiring the presence of a chaperone. Two Oxford college students, Jack, and his friend Charley, invite the women of their dreams, Kitty and Amy, over for a romantic afternoon. They plan to declare their love! (Intended to be properly chaperoned by Charley’s aunt, Donna Lucia d’Alvadorez, of course!) (Charley has never met his Aunt, by the way.) Jack and Charley, would be in serious difficulties if they were not very ably served by Jack’s manservant, Brassett.) When Charley’s “real” aunt has her train delayed, Jack and Charley are forced to find an alternative chaperone (an “Aunt impersonator”) if they are going to have a chance to propose before their lady friends leave town. Jack and Charley, would be in even worse difficulties if they were not very ably served by Jack’s manservant, Brassett, who rescues many situations.) Enter their friend, Lord Fancourt Babberly, known as Babbs, who agrees to play/impersonate the part of the wealthy aunt from Brazil. He will be the “fake Aunt.” Wearing an old-fashioned dress, complete with a shawl and wig, Babbs charms Kitty and Amy into thinking he is Charley's wealthy widowed aunt. What could possibly go wrong?? Things go perfectly until “Charley’s Aunt” attracts the attention of a few “gentleman callers” of his own. Who are these “gentlemen callers?” They are Jack’s father, Sir Francis Chesney, and Stephen Spettigue, guardian to Kitty and Amy. They are convinced that they need to woo this widow for her money. Sir Francis, does this to try help his son with his future career, and Mr. Spettigue because he is greedy. Things become more complicated when the REAL Donna Lucia d’Alvadorez arrives with her ward, Ela Delahay. Eventually, the various mistakes are set right in this classic, fast-paced farce that has delighted audiences for many years. |
